File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to transfer files between computers on a network such as the Internet. Many FTP sites are heavily used and require several attempts before connecting. This guide will help you to transfer your local files to a remote folder using FTP client software.
You will need
- FTP client
- Computer with Internet connection
Instructions
- Download and install FTP client software; if your remote system requires a Secure FTP login, ensure your client supports it.
- Launch your FTP client on your system; folders on your hard drive should show up to the side.
- Locate the menu option that allows you to connect to a remote system; Usually it is under File: Connect, or something similar.
- At the connect dialogue window, type in the remote address, login, password and port; you may have the option of anonymous login, but not all sites allow anonymous login.
- Once connected, navigate to the remote folder that you want to upload to; it should be located to the side of the window.
- On the opposite side of the window, displaying your local files, navigate to the folder or files on your hard drive you want to upload and highlight them.
- Locate and click the Upload button to begin transfer.
- Monitor the progress somewhere near the bottom of the program window until the transfer is complete.
Do
- Note that most FTP clients are set to disconnect from the remote host after only a few minutes of inactivity.
